MU unbeatean for 1300 days against Arsenal
Arsenal have not beaten Manchester United in the last 1300 days and this bad run extended after a 2-1 loss at the Emirates stadium.
Kieran Gibbs scored an own goal in the second half before Wayne Rooney punished Arsenal with yet another counter-attack. The solitary goal from Arsenal came from Olivier Giroud, who made his return from injury. The Frenchman has been sorely missed in the last few weeks as Danny Welbeck has not been able to step up with a similar goal return. The former Manchester United striker once again failed to find the back of the net despite having some good chances.
Giroud showed they way by scoring within 20 minutes after coming on to the pitch. After the match, a disappointed Arsene Wenger said that his team were naive in defending. This was after the team conceded two goals from counter-attack. Wenger did not make a lot of ill-advised comments about the referee, as he could have been criticised for some poor decisions. England defender Kieran Gibbs was clearly pushed by United midfielder Marouane Fellaini in the events leading to the first goal.Fellaini was also marginally offside. Wenger said that he can take positives from the match and this included a fantastic performance from all players.
He felt that the team did everything apart from scoring."It was one-way traffic and we lost the game, we have to take it on the chin. I know we'll be criticised for it but you have to respect the energy levels we put in.We paid for the slightest mistake and it's very frustrating to come away with nothing. We had the best chances and we could have finished better. At 1-0 we should have been more cautious not to give the second goal away. There was plenty of time to come back and that's where we made the mistake,” said Wenger.
