Martin Keown says Arsenal must make decision on David Luiz’s future

Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes his former club must strengthen the central defensive department in the summer. The north London side have remained unbeaten in the Premier League in 2020 under Mikel Arteta but they have still had the tendency to concede goals which have contributed to a few disappointing draws.

Moreover, there have also been lucky victories during the run and Keown feels the backline should be bolstered in the summer. He added that the centre-back options should be re-evaluated and questioned whether Luiz will remain the leader at the back, particularly with him having entered the final phase of his professional career, he told: “I still feel the manager will want to strengthen in that area. Then it’s a case of deciding if David Luiz is going to be the leader at the back. Are they going to build around him or do they want to go in a different direction?”

The north London giants recently registered
a third-straight victory in the Premier League but the performance was far from impressive. The Gunners conceded a number of goalscoring chances for West Ham United but the east London outfit were unable to take advantage due to poor finishing and goalkeeper Bernd Leno making key saves.

They are currently five points behind Manchester United for the final Champions League
spot with a game in hand over Manchester City whom they face on Wednesday night. The Gunners have had a dreadful record against the Citizens in the Premier League and they have not beaten them in any meeting since the backend of 2015.

As a result, they are definitely the underdogs for the forthcoming contest at the Etihad Stadium but Arteta will be hoping that his team can put up a strong defensive display and find the breakthrough on the counter-attack.
